Bigi Pan and Nickerie

Rice country, the Corantijn River, and the Bigi Pan wetlands, a serious birding landscape on the Guyana border.

The place

Nieuw Nickerie is the northwestern town, facing Guyana across the Corantijn. Around it, rice fields run toward the horizon. Bigi Pan is a multiple-use management area of lagoon, mangrove, and swamp. Waterbirds, including scarlet ibis, are why birders come.

The town is a working place, not a resort strip. Evenings are quiet. The trip is about wetlands at dawn and the long road back along the coast.

Getting there

The east-west road from Paramaribo reaches Nieuw Nickerie in about half a day, depending on stops and the road. Boats into Bigi Pan are arranged in the district. Bring binoculars if you have them. They are the point of the journey.

Pair it with

The coastal alternative on the ten-day route when Galibi is out of season, or a birding detour of two nights on its own.
