Destinations
The coast is where the roads are. The interior is rivers, forest, and airstrips. Choose by the time you have, not by how close the dots look on a map.
Capital
Paramaribo historic center
A wooden UNESCO center on the Suriname River, compact enough to walk, with colonial streets, a market, and places of worship side by side.
East of the river
Commewijne
A former plantation district of creeks, ferries, and wooden estates, just across the Suriname River from Paramaribo.
Brokopondo
Brokopondo and Brownsberg
A vast reservoir and a forested plateau above its eastern shore, south of the city on the Afobaka road.
Sipaliwini
Upper Suriname River
Saamaka villages and forest stays reached by boat from Atjoni, south of the reservoir.
Interior
Central Suriname Nature Reserve
A huge UNESCO forest around the Coppename River, Raleigh Falls, and the Voltzberg dome. This is an expedition, not a day trip.
Marowijne
Galibi and the Atlantic coast
Kali'na villages and a nesting beach for leatherback and green sea turtles, at the mouth of the Marowijne. Seasonal, and only with local guides.
Northwest
Bigi Pan and Nickerie
Rice country, the Corantijn River, and the Bigi Pan wetlands, a serious birding landscape on the Guyana border.
Near the capital
Day trips from the city
Cola Creek and Berg en Dal, the easy escapes south of Paramaribo when you want water and forest without a multi-day boat.
