The place
The historic inner city sits on the left bank of the Suriname River. Wooden houses, brick, and dark timber line Waterkant, the streets around Independence Square, and the blocks inland from the water.
Fort Zeelandia holds the river corner. The Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral is one of the largest wooden churches in the Americas. A short walk reaches the Palm Garden, the Central Market, and the wooden Neveh Shalom synagogue on Keizerstraat.
Evenings belong to the river breeze and to food. Roti, pom, Javanese plates, and peanut soup show how many kitchens share this city.
Getting there
Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport is at Zanderij, about an hour by road south of the city. Taxis and hotel transfers cover the ride. If the car is not arranged ahead of time, agree the fare before you load your bags.
Once you are in the center, walk. The grid is small. A taxi or minibus is useful for the market, the bridge, or an evening trip across town.
Pair it with
Give the center two nights, then add a day across the river in Commewijne. That pairing is the four-day route.
