Four days in Paramaribo and Commewijne

A short trip that stays on paved roads and the river crossing: the wooden center, a plantation district, and one swim south of the city.

A suggested route, not a package you can book here.

  1. Day 1: Arrive and walk the river

Land at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport and transfer to a room in or near the historic center. Walk Waterkant and Independence Square in the late afternoon. Eat nearby. The Palm Garden is enough of a destination if the light is already going.

  2. Day 2: Fort, cathedral, market

Go to the Central Market in the morning, while it is working. Then Fort Zeelandia, the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, and Neveh Shalom on Keizerstraat. Leave the hottest hour for a long lunch. Roti or a Javanese plate will tell you more about the city than another facade.

  3. Day 3: Cross to Commewijne

Cross the Suriname River by the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge or the Meerzorg ferry. Visit Fort Nieuw Amsterdam and one former plantation, such as Peperpot, Frederiksdorp, or the ruins at Mariënburg. This is a full day. Read it as plantation history, including slavery, not as a row of pretty houses.

  4. Day 4: Cola Creek or Berg en Dal, then the airport

If the flight is late in the day, go south to Cola Creek or Berg en Dal in the morning and leave time for the hour-long ride to Zanderij. If the flight is early, skip the outing. A rushed swim is worse than a calm breakfast in the center.

Places on this route

If the flight lands late, drop the market into the next morning and keep Commewijne as a full day. Do not add Brownsberg to this route.
