Marowijne

Galibi and the Atlantic coast

Kali'na villages and a nesting beach for leatherback and green sea turtles, at the mouth of the Marowijne. Seasonal, and only with local guides.

The place

Galibi Nature Reserve is in the northeast, where the Marowijne meets the Atlantic, across from French Guiana. Leatherback and green turtles nest on these beaches, mostly from about March into July or August. The season shifts. Do not travel on a rumor of dates.

Kali'na villages, including Christiaankondre and Langamankondre, host this visit. Night walks follow their rules: no white lights, no flash, no touching animals, and you stay with the guide.

Getting there

Most people go by road to Albina, then by boat along the Marowijne. The boat depends on the sea at the river mouth. This is not a casual add-on to a weekend in Paramaribo.

Pair it with

In nesting season it can be the coastal chapter of the ten-day route. Outside the season, go to Bigi Pan instead.
