A suggested route, not a package you can book here.
Day 1: The wooden center
Settle in Paramaribo. Walk Waterkant, Fort Zeelandia, and the cathedral. Eat a proper meal. This day is also for confirming the departure time to Atjoni and what the boat ride requires.
Day 2: Market, food, and an early night
Morning at the Central Market. Lunch is roti, pom, or a Javanese plate, whichever the kitchen is actually cooking. Pack a dry bag. Sleep early. The Afobaka road starts before the day gets hot if you can arrange it.
Day 3: Road to Atjoni, boat upriver
Drive south past the reservoir to Atjoni. The boat up the Suriname River is the rest of the day. You are a guest of a Saamaka village or of a lodge that works with one. Do not plan a night drive back if the boat is delayed. That delay is why this route has spare time later.
Day 4: River and forest
Stay with the plan your host set: a forest walk, time in the village if you were invited into it, and the river itself. Ask before any photograph of a person. The howlers, if they are near, will tell you where the forest is.
Day 5: A second day on the water
Use the second full day for whatever the first day could not fit, usually a slower creek or a walk that was too wet the day before. Do not collect a list of villages. One place, properly hosted, is the trip.
Day 6: Return to Paramaribo
Boat to Atjoni and drive north. Aim to be off the Afobaka road before dark. The evening in the city is for a shower, a meal, and nothing else.
Day 7: A soft last day, or the airport
If you got back with daylight to spare and the flight is not until night, cross to Commewijne or go to Berg en Dal. If the return ran late, stay in the center and leave for Zanderij with a calm margin. Brownsberg only replaces the river days. It does not get added on the end.
Places on this route
Book the river stay before you book the flights. If the host cannot confirm a boat from Atjoni, spend the forest nights at Brownsberg instead of inventing a same-week expedition to Raleigh Falls.
